Information about Fluconazole (Generic Diflucan) :
Fluconazole is an antifungal medication used to treat fungal infections,
such as yeast infections of the mouth, throat, and esophagus; vaginal yeast infections; fungal urinary tract infections; pneumonia caused by yeast; and fungal infections throughout the whole body and in the blood. It may also be used to prevent fungal infections from occurring in people with suppressed immune systems such as cancer chemotherapy patients, organ transplant patients, and AIDS patients.
It may also be administered for other conditions as determined by your physician.
You should not use Fluconazole in case you are already taking Cisapride (Propulsid). In combination with Cisapride (Propulsid), Fluconazole may lead to serious, even fatal, heart problems.
Before using Fluconazole you should tell your doctor if you have any medical conditions listed below: kidney disease, or if you take other medicines. You may not be able to take Fluconazole, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during your treatment.
Be aware that Fluconazole may interact with some medicines. Consult with your health care provider in case you are taking any other drugs, especially any of the following: bosentan; cilostazol; cisapride; cyclosporine; dofetilide; doxercalciferol; certain medicines for anxiety or difficulty sleeping; medicines for diabetes that are taken by mouth; medicines for high cholesterol such as atorvastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin, or simvastatin; medicines for yeast or fungal infections; paricalcitol; phenytoin; pimozide; ramelteon; rifabutin; rifampin; tacrolimus; terfenadine; warfarin; water pills.
Fluconazole is in the FDA pregnancy category C. It is not clear whether it is deleterious to an unborn baby. You should not take Fluconazole without first talking to your doctor in case you are pregnant or could become pregnant during the treatment. It is known that Fluconazole passes into breast milk and may be harmful to a nursing baby. For this reason, Fluconazole should not be taken by nursing mothers. Avoid breast-feeding a baby while taking this medicine.
Take this medicine regularly as administered by your physician. It is recommended to take each dose with a full glass of water. A single dose of this medication is often used to treat vaginal yeast infections. In multiple-dose therapy, a double dose of Fluconazole is often taken on the first day of treatment to quickly get the proper amount of medicine into the body. Follow your doctor's directions.
The suspension should be shaken well before measuring a dose. You should use a dose-measuring spoon to measure the suspension properly. In case you do not have a special dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist where you can get one.
Keep the tablets at indoor temperature away from moisture and heat. Store the suspension at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Avoid freezing. Any unused suspension should be thrown away after 14 days.
What happens if I miss a dose?
In case you miss a dose of Fluconazole, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next intake, skip the missed dose and take it according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses to catch up.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention in case an overdose is suspected. Symptoms of a overdose are confusion, hallucinations, paranoia, decreased movement, decreased breathing, tearing eyes, drooling, urinary incontinence, seizures, and death.
What should I avoid while taking Fluconazole?
Alcohol in combination with Fluconazole may lead to the affection of the liver. Try to avoid alcohol or use it in moderation while taking Fluconazole.
