Information about Amoxicillin :
Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic used to treat certain infections. It affects the formation of the cell wall of bacteria. Amoxicillin kills bacteria and prevents their growth.
It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
You should not use Amoxicillin in case you are allergic to any ingredient in Amoxicillin or other penicillin antibiotics (eg, ampicillin).
In such cases it is obligatory to consult with your doctor or health care provider before taking this drug.
Before using Amoxicillin:
Before using Amoxicillin you should tell your doctor if you have any medical conditions listed below: you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding a baby; you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances; you have a history of allergies, asthma, hay fever, or hives; you have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, dizziness) to a cephalosporin (eg, cephalexin) or other beta-lactam antibiotic (eg, imipenem); your child is 9 years of age or younger with diarrhea and a stomach infection; you have infectious mononucleosis (mono); you have phenylketonuria.
Be aware that Amoxicillin may interact with some medicines. Consult with your health care provider in case you are taking any other drugs, especially any of the following: probenecid because it may increase the actions and side effects of Amoxicillin; tetracycline antibiotics (eg, doxycycline) because the effectiveness of Amoxicillin may be decreased; methotrexate because risk of side effects and toxicity, including kidney failure (severely decreased urine output, confusion, weight gain), unusual bruising or bleeding, possible increase in infections, fatigue, or mouth and skin ulcers, may be increased by Amoxicillin
Oral anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) because side effects, including risk of bleeding, may be increased by Amoxicillin; oral contraceptives (ie, birth control pills) because their effectiveness could be decreased by Amoxicillin.
It may not be a complete list of all interactions with other drugs. To prevent any complications you should check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.
How to use Amoxicillin:
Use this medicine as recommended by your physician. Amoxicillin should be taken orally with or without food. It is important to chew thoroughly before swallowing. Use Amoxicillin for the full course of treatment even if you feel better in a few days.
In case you miss a dose of Amoxicillin, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next intake, skip the missed dose and take it according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses to catch up.
Important safety information:
Be careful when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities as Amoxicillin usage may lead to drowsiness. Try to avoid such activities. Alcohol and certain other medicines may increase the risk of unfavorable reactions while taking Amoxicillin.
Use Amoxicillin for the full course of treatment, as any failures may decrease the effectiveness of Amoxicillin and may increase the risk that the bacteria will no longer be sensitive to Amoxicillin and will not be able to be treated by this or certain other antibiotics in the future.
Amoxicillin is used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Be aware that it is not effective for the treatment of viral infections (eg, the common cold).
Long-term or repeated use of Amoxicillin may lead to a second infection. Consult with your doctor in case signs of a second infection take place.
Phenylketonuria patients should know that Amoxicillin contains phenylalanine.
Consult with your doctor immediately if you experience severe diarrhea, stomach pain/cramps or bloody stools. This could be a symptom of a serious side effect requiring immediate medical attention. Do not treat diarrhea without consulting your doctor.
The effectiveness of your birth control pills may be decreased while taking Amoxicillin. If you want to prevent pregnancy, you should use an additional form of birth control (condoms).
Diabetes patients may have false test results with some urine glucose tests while using Amoxicillin. Consult with your doctor before you adjust your dose of your diabetes drug or change your diet.
PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING:
In case you plan pregnancy, you should consult with your doctor and discuss the benefits and risks of taking Amoxicillin while pregnancy. It is known that Amoxicillin passes into breast milk. In case you are or will be breast-feeding a baby while you are using Amoxicillin, consult with your doctor or pharmacist and discuss the risks to your baby.
Possible side effects of Amoxicillin:
You should consult with your doctor in case you have any of side effects especially bothersome listed below: diarrhea; dizziness; irritation of mouth or throat; nausea; vomiting.
Seek emergency immediately in case you have any of these severe side effects: severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloody stools; chills; seizures; severe diarrhea; stomach pain/cramps; vaginal discharge or irritation; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
