Information about Cephalexin (Generic Keflex) :
Cephalexinis is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections.
It affects the formation of the cell wall of bacteria. Cephalexinis kills bacteria and prevents their growth.
You should not use Cephalexin in case you are allergic to any ingredient in it or any other cephalosporin antibiotic (eg, cefuroxime).
In such case it is obligatory to consult with your doctor or health care provider before taking this drug.
Before using Cephalexin:
Before using Cephalexin you should tell your doctor if you have any medical conditions listed below: you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding a baby; you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substance; you have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, dizziness) to a penicillin (eg, amoxicillin) or other beta-lactam antibiotic (eg, imipenem); you have stomach or bowel problems (eg, inflammation), blood clotting problems, kidney or liver problems, or poor nutrition.
Be aware that Cephalexin may interact with some medicines. Consult with your health care provider in case you are taking any other drugs, especially any of the following: metformin because its actions and the risks of its side effects may be increased by Cephalexin; probenecid because it may increase the actions and the risk of Cephalexin 's side effects; anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) because the risk of side effects such as bleeding may be increased.
It may not be a complete list of all interactions with other drugs. To prevent any complications you should check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.
How to use Cephalexin:
Use Cephalexinas as recommended by your physician. Cephalexin should be taken orally with or without food.
In case you miss a dose of Cephalexin, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next intake, skip the missed dose and take it according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses to catch up.
Important safety information:
Be careful when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities as Cephalexin usage may lead to dizziness. Try to avoid such activities.
The ability of your blood to clot may be decreased by Cephalexin. Try to avoid activities that may cause bruising or injury. Consult with your doctor in case you have unusual bruising or bleeding. Tell your doctor if you have dark, tarry, or bloody stools.
Use Cephalexin for the full course of treatment, as any failures may decrease the effectiveness of Cephalexin and may increase the risk that the bacteria will no longer be sensitive to Cephalexin and will not be able to be treated by this or certain other antibiotics in the future.
Cephalexin is used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Be aware that it is not effective for treatment of viral infections (eg, the common cold).
Long-term or repeated use of Cephalexin may lead to a second infection. Consult with your doctor in case signs of a second infection take place.
Diabetes patients may have false test results with some urine glucose tests while using Cephalexin. Consult with your doctor before you adjust your dose of your diabetes drug or change your diet.
Cephalexin usage may affect certain lab tests. Notify your doctor and lab personnel that you are using Cephalexin.
The ELDERLY are likely to be more sensitive to the effects of Cephalexin. Use it with caution in this group.
You should use Cephalexin with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 10 years old who have diarrhea or an infection of the stomach or bowel.
PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING:
In case you become pregnant, consult with your doctor and discuss the benefits and risks of taking Cephalexin while pregnancy. It is known that Cephalexin passes into breast milk. In case you are or will be breast-feeding a baby while you use Cephalexin, consult with your doctor and discuss any possible risks to your baby.
Possible side effects of Cephalexin:
You should consult with your doctor in case you have any of side effects especially bothersome listed below: diarrhea; dizziness; headache; indigestion; joint pain; stomach pain; tiredness.
Seek emergency immediately in case you have any of these severe side effects: severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); agitation; confusion; dark urine; decreased urination; fever; hallucinations; red, swollen, or blistered skin; seizures; severe or blood diarrhea; severe stomach pain; severe tiredness; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual vaginal pain, odor, or discharge; yellowing of the eyes or skin.
