Information about Lansoprazole (Generic Prevacid) :
Lansoprazole is used to treat and prevent stomach and intestinal ulcers, erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid), and other conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Lansoprazole helps to decrease acid production in the stomach. Some conditions are treated with a combination of lansoprazole and antibiotics.
Lansoprazole may also be administered to treat other conditions as determined by your physician.
You should not use Lansoprazole in case you have any condition mentioned below: you are allergic to any drugs; you have any type of liver disease.
In such cases you may not be able to use lansoprazole, or you may need a special dosage adjustment or tests during treatment.
Be aware that Lansoprazole may interact with some medicines. Consult with your health care provider in case you are taking any other drugs, especially any of the next: ampicillin; bisacodyl; delavirdine; digoxin; fluvoxamine; iron salts; itraconazole; ketoconazole; sucralfate; theophylline; voriconazole.
Lansoprazole is in FDA pregnancy category B. It is not expected to be detrimental to an unborn baby but before taking Lansoprazole if you are pregnant first talking to your doctor. Consult with your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby because it is not clear whether Lansoprazole passes into breast milk.
You should tell your doctor if you have phenylketonuria because some forms of lansoprazole contains phenylalanine.
Do not use this drug in children younger than 1 year old.
How to use lansoprazole:
You should use lansoprazole as recommended by your doctor. Take each dose with a full glass (8 ounces) of water. lansoprazole should be taken orally once a day before meal. It is obligatory to swallow capsule whole without chewing, dividing or crushing. In case you have difficulty swallowing capsule open it and sprinkle granules on spoonful of pudding, applesauce, yogurt, cottage cheese, strained pears, or a nutritional drink and swallowed immediately without chewing or crushing. Do not store the mixture for later use. It is also possible to dissolve the medicine from a lansoprazole capsule in 2 ounces (1/ 4 cup) of apple juice, orange juice, or tomato juice or in 2 tablespoons of water. Mix received mixture and drink all at once. To make sure you get the entire dose, add a little more juice or water to the same glass, swirl gently and drink right away. Discard the empty capsule.
Take lansoprazole regularly and do not give up taking without consultation with your doctor, even if you feel well.
Lansoprazole should be stored at indoor temperature. Avoid humidity and heat.
In case you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But do not take extra dose in situation when you forget to take Lansoprazole and it is near the time for the next intake. Wait and take next dose according to the schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up for a missed one.
Seek emergency in case an overdosage is suspected. Serious side effects are not likely to occur.
In case you also use sucralfate (Carafate), try not to take it at the same time as you take lansoprazole. Sucralfate may lower the absorption of lansoprazole. It is necessary to wait at least 30 minutes after taking lansoprazole before you take sucralfate.
Possible side effects of Lansoprazole:
You should consult with your doctor in case you have any of side effects especially bothersome listed below: headache; nausea, stomach pain; diarrhea; or constipation.
Seek emergency in case you have any of these severe side effects: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
