Information about Finasteride (Generic Propecia) :
Finasteride is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) and male pattern hair loss (baldness). It prevents the transformation of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT takes part in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and hair loss.
Finasteride may be also administered to treat other conditions as determined by your physician.
You should not take this medication if you have liver disease. In such case it is obligatory to consult with your doctor or health care provider before taking this medicine because you may not be able to take Finasteride, or you may need a special dosage adjustment and monitoring during the course of treatment.
Be careful, Finasteride is for MEN ONLY and it is not administered for women or children.
Be aware that Finasteride may interact with some medicines. Consult with your health care provider in case you are taking any other drugs, especially any of the next: some blood pressure medications; male hormones (example: testosterone); saw palmetto; soy isoflavones supplements.
Finasteride is not administered for women. Do not contact or take this medication if you are pregnant or are could become pregnant during treatment. Finasteride is in the FDA pregnancy X. It means that Finasteride may be detrimental to an unborn baby. If you are pregnant or may become pregnant do not handle crushed or broken Finasteride tablets because it could be absorbed through the skin. There is evidence that Finasteride may cause defects in a developing male baby. Do not take Finasteride if you are breast-feeding a baby because it is not clear whether it passes into breast milk.
How to use Finasteride:
You should use Finasteride as recommended by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food. Drink a glass of water with this medicine. Take Finasteride regularly to get the most benefit.
There are no restrictions on food, beverages, or activities while taking Finasteride unless your doctor recommends otherwise.
Blood tests or other forms of monitoring may be performed during treatment with finasteride. For instance, PSA (prostate-specific antigen) that helps to detect prostate cancer.
Finasteride should be stored at indoor temperature. Avoid moisture and heat.
In case you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But do not take extra dose in situation when you forget to take Finasteride and it is near the time for the next intake. Wait and take next dose according to the schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up for a missed one. It is not allowed to take 2 doses at once.
Overdose:
Seek emergency in case an overdose is suspected. Symptoms of overdose are not known.
Possible side effects of Finasteride:
Stop taking Finasteride and seek emergency in case you have any of these severe signs of an allergic reaction: difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives.
You should consult with your doctor in case you have any of side effects especially bothersome listed below: decreased libido (sex drive); decreased volume of ejaculate; impotence (trouble getting or keeping an erection); or breast tenderness or enlargement.
